Hiking the Swiss Alps For people around the world, Switzerland is a storybook land of snow-capped peaks, mountain meadows bursting with wild flowers, fertile valleys dotted with picturesque villages and crystal clear lakes. It is a fairytale land of hand carved clocks and music box houses. This is the Switzerland of our dreams. This is Kandersteg. Surrounded by the great majestic Bernese Oberland mountains, Kandersteg, homebase for this hiking tour, is situated at 1200 m elevation, with 350 kms of hiking paths, direct rail connections to major European cities and a simple, relaxed way of life. Hiking paths are endless and each day we explore a new direction, along the thundering Kander river, to cool glacier lakes, through flower strewn meadows and high above the valley where mountain sheep graze and glaciers hang like frosting. This is truly one of the few old pockets of Switzerland left. Guests live together in a farmhouse chalet, sharing evening meals. With easy rail travel, guests can visit other cities in Switzerland such as the capital, Bern, Lucerne and Geneva. A side trip to Italy is always a favourite. There, we visit the Italian markets, swim, enjoy some Italian food, that great Italian ice cream and return home to our cozy chalet for the night. Guests may also be tempted to try a tandem paraglide or take a ride on the summer bobsled. With visits to a mountain cheese maker, the sheep festival on the Gemmi pass, to some of the eight mountain huts, and still have time to relax in the hammock at the chalet, hikers will never be bored. In the evening, you may want to unwind in an open air café, go dancing or enjoy some of the local musical entertainment in the village. On an early morning we will visit the Schwarenbach Inn on the Gemmi pass. This Inn was once visited by famous writers, scientist and artists such as Picasso, Mark Twain and Guy du Maupassant. This is a hiking tour with a personal touch that will leave you wanting to return.
