Markland
Walk softly in the presence of a soul”
Markland, Nova Scotia.
Distance: 12 km.
Walk through the historic Icelandic settlement (1875-1882) and visit the marked homesteads, which are an easy access from the gravel road.
Markland is situated between Caribou Gold Mines and Mooseland. In 1885, 100 acre grants of land were given to Icelanders who were brave enough to travel to this part of the world to begin a new life. This rocky, unforgiving soil, proved to be too difficult for planting and these honest, hard working souls finally gave in to the struggle and left the settlement in 1882.
