Cape Split
Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia.
Distance: 16 km return.
The hike begins in Scots Bay. The moderate walk takes you through well-trodden forest paths. You will walk beneath the canopy of mixed and hardwood forest with birch, poplar and maple. In early spring, moss, Irishman’s breeches and trillium blanket the forest floor.
As you near the Split, you can hear the powerful waters of the Bay of Fundy pounding the great sandstone cliffs below. These tidal waters are the highest in the world, splitting at the Cape, churning up eddies and undertows where sea stacks rise up to meet the spray. The green meadow at the point of the split is the nesting place for many sea birds. On rare occasions, you may see a peregrine falcon or bald eagle soaring above.
