Chebucto Head
Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Distance: 8 km return
Moderate hike with varied terrain over gravel paths, granite boulders and through some thicket, always with magnificent views of the Atlantic and Halifax Harbour, the second largest ice free harbour in the world.
The trailhead is in Duncan’s Cove, the turn around spot, Ketch Harbour.
On this hike you can view the oldest working lighthouse in North America, the Sambro Head lighthouse.
Built in 1758, it stands on a granite island about 2 miles outside the entrance to Halifax Harbour, marking an area of dangerous shoals. The outside was made red and white to make it more visible in snow. It’s light has greeted immigrants, war brides and refugees to a new land. It has watched fishing boats and sails of yachting fleets. It has been the last light of home and the first of safe return for sailors from Nova Scotia.
